Dave, the owner of a rental property in Victoria, decided to redevelop the building into four condo units. Although the structure had interesting, Frank Lloyd Wright–inspired lines, it needed a contemporary landscape to help it stand out in the market.
Dave envisioned a clean, modern outdoor space that would unify the four units without sacrificing each unit’s sense of privacy. He also wanted a nod to the nearby Moss Rock greenspace, bringing its natural aesthetic into the design.
The biggest challenge was how to provide access to one of the condos, which required walking through another unit’s backyard. A traditional, solid fence would have turned that yard into a cramped box, compromising the open, contemporary feel Dave was hoping for.
Before reaching out, Dave considered standard fencing or simply leaving the backyard open. Neither option met his goals: a standard fence would look too closed-off, while a completely open yard would offer no real privacy or definition for residents.
We designed a staggered fencing layout to break up the line of sight while maintaining a sense of openness. To further connect with the environment:
Drawing Inspiration from Moss Rock:
We integrated natural boulders, moss-like scleranthus, and ornamental grasses to reflect the local grasslands.
Contemporary Aesthetic:
The modern fence lines and swaths of ornamental grasses gave the property a fresh, current look.
Specialty Plant Focus:
Strategic pops of succulents, such as Echeveria, provided focal points to capture attention in key areas.
Dave’s once-ordinary rental property transformed into a sleek, nature-inspired condo complex:
Improved Curb Appeal:
The modernized landscaping complemented the building’s architecture and helped each unit feel distinct yet cohesive.
Practical Privacy:
The staggered fence design preserved each owner’s personal space without boxing them in.
Boosted Property Value:
By blending contemporary lines with natural elements, Dave’s condos stood out in the market and resonated with buyers seeking a unique slice of Victoria living.
