From Windy to Wonderful: Transforming an Alberta Backyard with a Modern Deck

LOCATION: Airdrie AB  |  TYPE: Deck | COMPLETED: 2007 | CLIENT: Private Residence | Budget: $28,000

A modern deck showcases unfinished wooden beams forming a pergola frame, a planter box bursting with flowers, stairs leading up, and a closed patio umbrella—an inviting Alberta backyard transformation with nearby houses and grassy yard in the background.

Introduction

Claire and Renald both have large families and busy jobs in Calgary. They love hosting gatherings for relatives and a wide circle of friends, but their windy backyard made it difficult to relax and socialize outdoors. They wanted a versatile, sheltered space that could comfortably accommodate everyone—whether for holiday get-togethers or casual weekend barbecues.

A wooden pergola is under construction on a modern deck beside a house, transforming this Alberta backyard. A ladder stands nearby, with assorted tools and building materials scattered around the deck and yard.

What They Wanted

They hoped for a design that would:

  • Combat Strong Winds: Create a comfortable dining area protected from Alberta’s notorious wind gusts.
  • Offer Ample Seating: A built-in bench for casual, flexible seating options.
  • Bring Nature Centre Stage: A living tree right in the middle of the deck for a natural focal point.
  • Break Up the Flatness: Depart from the typical prairie-style landscaping, adding visual interest and a more organic feel to their backyard.

A partially built wooden pergola is being constructed on a modern deck in an Alberta backyard next to a house. Construction materials and a ladder are visible, while a person works with a small tractor nearby, transforming the outdoor space.

Challenges:

Despite having ample yard space, the strong winds made it tough to enjoy outdoor dining or large family gatherings. Conventional fencing options weren’t enough to block the gusts, and Claire and Renald wanted a solution that remained open and welcoming rather than feeling closed in.

A dog walks on a grassy lawn beside a beige house with large windows. In the background, a modern deck with a pergola and potted plants is transforming this Alberta backyard, while another house can be seen further away.

What They Tried:

They considered tall fences and classic windbreaks, but these solutions either blocked the view or looked too makeshift. The couple needed something both functional and attractive, with enough space for extended family and friends to gather comfortably.

A modern deck with planter boxes, flower beds, a tree, a pergola frame, and a built-in curved bench sits in an Alberta backyard, surrounded by a spacious grassy yard and open fields.

The Solution:

After discussing their needs, we designed and built a large cedar deck with a modern pergola and custom windscreen:

  • Modern Pergola: Using 20-foot-long 4×6 cedar beams, we created a bold, eye-catching framework that provides architectural interest.
  • Custom Wind Screen: We installed a lattice-style grid with clear plexiglass panels around the dining area to keep out strong gusts while preserving the view.
  • Built-In Cedar Bench & Planter: A wraparound bench offers plenty of seating, featuring a backrest planter and a beautiful, living tree at its center. This centerpiece not only anchors the design but also brings a lush, natural element to the flat prairie setting.

When the building inspector saw the finished project, they famously remarked, “Now that’s how you build a deck!”

A modern deck in an Alberta backyard features wooden steps, a raised flower-filled planter, and an unfinished pergola frame. A tree, patio umbrella, and nearby houses add charm to this transforming outdoor space.

The Results:

  • Wind-Sheltered Dining: The plexiglass panels and pergola framework let Claire and Renald entertain comfortably without contending with blustery weather.
  • Year-Round Usability: Cedar construction and a solid foundation ensure the deck can handle Alberta’s harsh climate.
  • Stunning Focal Point: The built-in planter with a feature tree provides a fresh, organic feel—delivering the “wow” factor they craved.
  • Boosted Home Value: A thoughtfully designed, visually striking deck that stands up to local conditions significantly enhances property appeal.
